"Hit the Books" offers students one of two options in the 2006-2007 school year: student accountability or LEAPs tutoring.
Option 1: Student Accountability
Students can sign up for "Hit the Books" to contract with parents and Boxing Resource Center to be accountable for their grades. The student contracts to keep grades at a specified level, and reports to BRC by presenting his/her report card each grading period. When students make the grade, they get on the "Hit the Books" education achievers display. When students don't make the grade, they use practice time to study until their grades improve.
Option 2: LEAPs Tutoring for Qualified Students
In 2006, Boxing Resource Center was awarded another grant from the State of Tennessee LEAPs (Lottery Educational Afterschool Program) for the 2006-2007 school year. In this year's program, students are picked up from Glencliff High School (our 2005-2007 partner school) and taken to Boxing Resource Center in the afternoons. Students get a healthy snack and participate in educational programs such as homework, group activities, and then they have a sports workout, such as boxing. Boxing Resource Center provides gloves, equipment, and coaching, and mentors teach students skills needed in the ring while practicing those skills on heavy bags, agility bags, speed bags, training systems, shields, and mitts. In this program, students do not spar each other. The LEAPs program is currently operating at capacity. Forty-two high school students are currently enrolled.
