Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to bring to class?
Wear comfortable clothing, and tennis, wrestling, or boxing shoes. Our gym is hot in the summer and cool in the winter. Dress for the weather.
You can borrow our boxing gloves until you decide to buy your own. Handwraps are $5. A coach can show you how to wrap your hands.
Can I box if I don't have any experience?
We can teach you everything you need to know to have a positive experience at the gym, including the skills necessary to compete, if that's your goal. Beginners are welcome at our gym!
Who teaches the classes? What qualifies them to teach me?
Our classes are taught by our volunteer coaches. All coaches are registered and certified through USA Boxing, and have years of experience with fitness and competitive boxers. Each coach has his/her own style, and each coach will challenge you to become a better boxer. Click the "Staff" link for information about each coach.
What do I need to do if I want to compete?
You need to tell the coaches your goals, so that we can assist you reach them. If you wish to compete, we will put you on a track toward that goal. You will eventually spar to get ready for competition.
What are the fees to join the gym?
Our fees are $60/month, which includes all classes, training, sparring, and open gym time. (We offer a sliding-scale and/or trade, for people of modest income.) We do not have hidden fees, nor do we require long-term contracts. Your membership fees go to pay our rent, utilities, equipment costs, and programing costs.
Is one-on-one training available at the gym?
Yes, most of our coaches are available for hire as a personal coach. Contact a coach directly for availability and costs.
Can BRC coaches train me in amateur or professional boxing?
Yes, both. Our coaches have experience with amateur and professional boxers, and know the particulars of each sport. If your goal is competition, then our coaches will select training methods appropriate for your level of competition and your personal style.
Do I have to join USA Boxing?
Boxers wishing to spar and/or compete must register with USA Boxing each calendar year. Costs are $40/year. Applications are available at the gym. Personal checks are payable to "Southeastern Association."
Can I volunteer as a coach, referee, or judge?
Yes! We welcome individuals who wish to contribute to the community by coaching or officiating. No experience necessary. We will teach you everything you need to know. All volunteers register with USA Boxing, through the gym.
